Who is the favorite?

After losing two out of its first three contests, Langdon-Edmore-Munich has won 17 straight games. The Cardinals rolled through the District 8 tournament with dominant wins over Rolla (68-27) and Dunseith (60-29). L-E-M has no seniors on its roster and they have one of the best Region 4 players in junior guard Callie Ronningen. In the Cardinals 18 wins this season, just three of them have been wins by single digits. Rob Scherr has this team rolling in the right direction this season.

Who else?

Four Winds-Minnewaukan: The Lady Indians had a shot at defeating L-E-M at the Hillsboro Holiday Hoops tournament but fell short 58-56. Four Winds-Minnewaukan is the second best team in Region 4 and is loaded with scorers. Junior Latasha Bellile surpassed 1,000-career points this season and banged home five 3-pointers in the District 7 championship game. Junior Riah Littleghost is also a crafty combo guard for Sean Gourd’s squad that had five FW-M student-athletes were named to the All-District 7 team.

Dunseith: As dominant as L-E-M and FW-M have been this year, Dunseith isn’t far behind. However, the Dragons latest 60-29 loss to L-E-M worries me a tad bit. Dunseith has shown they can hang with the Cardinals as they only lost to them by nine in January. John Demery’s team is led by four seniors and have two players that are six-feet tall. The Dragons should give FW-M a run for its money in the semifinals.

Dark Horse Team

Harvey-Wells County: Whenever a team has the District Senior Athlete of the Year on its roster, they are a team to watch out for. Jaye Fike has helped the Hornets to a 15-7 season and is one of the best players in this tournament. Harvey-Wells County played FW-M twice this season and lost to them by an average of 36 points, however, they have not played L-E-M this season. The Hornets and Cardinals are on the same side of the bracket and there’s a good chance they’ll meet in the semifinals. If that does happen L-E-M has to prepare for a team they haven’t faced this season in one day, which can be tricky.
