Who is the favorite?
After starting the season 3-3, LaMoure-Litchville-Marion rattled off 14 straight wins. The Loboes are paced by a combination of upperclassmen. L-L-M’s roster consists of six seniors that include Shay Ness, Jamison Kramer, Alex Klever and Jacob Ulmer. Kramer finished with nine points in the District 5 championship game before dropping 20 against Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier in the semifinals. The mixture between experienced players and a winning streak that started on Jan. 8 makes the Loboes a strong favorite to win the Region 3 championship. In the last two months, L-L-M is averaging 57.2 points per game and have shown that they can close out games against good competition.
Carrington: There’s a lot of athletes up and down Carrington’s roster starting with junior Seth Nelson. The 6-foot-4 forward is a threat beyond the arc and can out jump anybody in the gymnasium. Recently the Cardinals got back their starting forward in senior Trey Rosenau who is a brute force inside. Rosenau returned from an ACL injury on Feb. 1 and Carrington has won six of seven since. Senior McCoy VandeHoven paced the Cardinals with eight points in their District 5 title loss as it was Carrington’s first loss since Jan. 26. Tim Ranum’s squad seems to be back to full strength and their athletic play could carry them to a Region 3 championship.
Dark Horse Team
Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier: This Region is one of the tougher ones to predict just because teams have beat up on each other throughout the season. Edgeley-Kulm-Montpelier won 10 of its first 12 games before finishing the regular season with a 13-6 record. The Rebels have some height on its roster starting with 6-foot-9 senior Layne Entzi who has the wingspan to block any shot on the court. Entzi finished with five blocks and eight points in the Rebels 57-51 Region 3 qualifying win over Oakes on Feb. 25. E-K-M has a double-double machine in junior Cale Mathern and senior Isaac Huber along with sophomore Alex Huber have the ability to change their game on the offensive side of the basketball. The Rebels have lost their last five games by an average of six points and in a wide-open Region 3 tournament anything can happen.
